Whenever we think about what a poem might look like, we’d instantly start to think about lines adorned with low frequency words which are impossible to understand. A stereotypical poem would be the one which is really hard to decipher.
But this book is unique. The poems have little to no ‘low frequency words’ and is quite easy to understand the meaning behind the texts. The pages are adorned with cute little illustrations.
~ Overview:
This book consists of 248 pages, full of poems that tell a story. Unlike the stereotypical poems, the texts are really easy to decipher and anyone, literally anyone will be hooked onto it after reading the first line. The pages also contain illustrations which match the theme of the poem or the ‘story’ being told. It is mainly divided into 5 parts: wilting, falling, rooting, rising, blooming.
Wilting talks about the struggles of a breakup. Like what people usually go through after breaking up with someone they were intending to marry. It is something we all can relate to unless you’re some idk ( some weirdo who has never been in love I guess?).
Falling is based on grieving, depression, self-sabotage and healing. It talks about about struggling with inner demons, believing that you weren’t good enough. The idea of healing is also portrayed through self-love at the end of the chapter (or the last few poems).
Rooting portrays the struggles of being an immigrant; the struggles Rupi Kaur’s parents, especially her mother had to go through to provide a better future for their kids. (just an opinion: it was kind of heartbreaking to read that people made fun of her mother’s accent.)
Rising is all about finding a new love; a fresh start with someone who has a healthy mindset, possibly the one she’s woven her fate with.
Blooming is basically about being a woman; the struggles, the criticisms and everything.
~ My thoughts:
If I’m being honest, I really loved it.
I loved the fact that how simple and how beautiful the poems are. I have read poems by other poets too but they ended up making me feel worthless, as if my poems weren’t good enough. But Rupi Kaur is an inspiration, not a blockage like other poets.
A few days ago, I was reading another book by some other poet, her poems were full of low frequency words and the lines did not make sense at all. I felt like I couldn’t relate of any of the poems and I didn’t even finish reading the whole book.
The only reason people would read “the sun and her flowers” is because people can understand what is being told and people can also relate to her experiences. People are bound to read books they can relate to, not some shit painted in luxury. ( yeah the other book I’m talking about is literally shit painted with gold. I can’t even blame her cuz she was born with a silver spoon unlike most of us).
~ Some quotes:
“sun becomes moon / moon becomes sun / I become ghost”
“it isn’t what we left behind that breaks me; it’s what we could’ve had we stayed”
“I hear the hummingbirds outside flirting with the flowers”
“I long for you but you long for someone else. I deny the one who wants me cause I want someone else”
“I used to dream of being so strong nothing could shake me. now. I am. so strong. that nothing shakes me. and all I dream is to soften”
“that since day one, she’s already had everything she needs within herself. it’s the world that convinced her she did not”
“their concept of beauty is manufactured, I’m not”
that’s all you ppl. have a nice day (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
